I feel like chicken pot pie is the definition of comfort food.

If you have been depriving yourself of this amazing meat pie for fear of the gluten and dairy content, fear no more.

I’ve made a few tweaks to the traditional recipe so that it’s completely gluten-free, grain-free, dairy-free and soy-free.  Plus, with the homemade bone broth, this stuff is pretty nutrient-dense! Enjoy!

Try Organic Food! | The Bacon Project

I was in the checkout lane at Costco yesterday, and I had some organic berries in my cart.  As the cashier was ringing up my produce, he asked me what the difference was between organic and “normal” berries.

Obviously the checkout lane isn’t a great setting for a long conversation, so I just gave a casual response about less pesticides, trying my best not to leap onto the nearest soapbox.

He said that he noticed everyone is buying ‘organic’ everything these days, and he just didn’t understand what the fuss was about.

I can see where he’s coming from, and that got me thinking… How did conventional farming become the new “normal”?

All this hype about eating organic.. Are pesticides really that harmful?

Over 1,400 pesticides have been registered (er.. “approved”) by the EPA.

The President’s Cancer Panel Report says, “Exposure to these chemicals has been linked to brain/central nervous system, breast, colon, lung, ovarian, pancreatic, kidney, testicular, and stomach cancers, as well as Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma, multiple myeloma, and soft tissue sarcoma.”

It makes sense if you think about it. These chemicals have been developed to poison various living things (bugs, fungus, weeds, rodents, etc). If they can effectively kill these things, what makes us think that they won’t have any negative effects on us?

Eric Schlosser, author of Fast Food Nation, points out, “Organophosphates—one of the most common types of pesticides—were developed in Nazi Germany to be used as chemical weapons. It was later recognized that the same sort of nerve gases formulated to attack soldiers and civilians could be used against agricultural pests.”

I know it sounds crazy, but spraying these chemicals on crops doesn’t really make them less harmful to humans.

Maybe in the short term we can get away with a little exposure to these chemicals, but short term isn’t what we’re dealing with here.

Most pesticides have a tendency to accumulate, or break down very slowly, in the body tissues. Unfortunately, this means that consuming a little pesticide residue every day, over the course of a lifetime, can be quite harmful.
